Former Pennsylvania state trooper kills wife then himself

By Brendan O'Brien

(Reuters) - A former Pennsylvania state trooper killed his estranged wife on Thursday before taking his own life in a Decatur Township grocery store, according to state police and local media.

Investigators said Mark Miscavish, 51, went to the County Market, where his wife Traci worked, found her in an upstairs office and shot her with a shotgun before shooting himself at about 10 a.m.

Traci Miscavish, 49, filed for divorce on Friday, according to Centredaily.com. Her husband was a state policeman for 15 years, the Web site said.

Mark Miscavish was arrested on January 23 after he allegedly assaulted his wife and threatened to kill her, according to Centredaily.com.

Traci Miscavish was granted a protection-from-abuse order while her husband faced charges stemming from the incident, the site said.

Decatur Township is about 130 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.

Where did Saturn's rings come from? Mystery gets a new clue.

Saturn's rings are one of the most recognized features of the solar system, but scientists don't know how they got there. New data suggest they're older than some theories suggested.

New evidence from the US-European Cassini mission to Saturn suggests a very early birth for ices in Saturn?s spectacular system of rings and moonlets, dating back to shortly after the planet itself formed.

The results deepen a mystery that has bedeviled Saturn watchers since Galileo first spotted what later would be interpreted as rings in 1610: How did the rings form? And, more recently, what sustains the ring system?

?No one actually knows why the rings can survive for 4.5 billion years,? says Scott Kenyon, an astronomer at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Mass. ?At the moment, we don?t have a good model? that explains this longevity.

The apparently implausible life span of the ring system has led some researchers to propose that the system didn?t form shortly after the planet did.?

Instead, it might have formed perhaps 100 million years ago. The raw material for the rings and moonlets could have come from the debris spawned by a collision between close-in moons, or between a close-in moon and a comet.

But the recent-ring scenario has had a troubled existence.?

In 2007, for example, scientists reported evidence from Cassini?s Ultraviolet Imaging Spectrometer indicating that the rings had significant age differences and that the material in the rings was constantly being recycled as moonlets collided. Some of the debris later would form into new moonlets.?

That evidence didn?t support a single, recent violent encounter between objects as a source of material for the ring system.

Now, researchers using another of Cassini?s instruments, the Visual and Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (VIMS), have uncovered further evidence for this recycling as they have mapped changes in the composition of the ring material and moonlets that form a 40,800-mile-wide band around the planet.

Perhaps more important, Cassini has uncovered far more water ice in the system than comets could deliver.

The system ?is very ice rich,? says Bonnie Buratti, a researcher at NASA?s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., and a member of the VIMS team.

To Dr. Kenyon, the results showing ices throughout the system speak to a primeval origin.

?All of the stuff inside the really major moons is composed of the same stuff as the major moons,? he says. ?That?s really nice to know because that tells you the rings are 4.5 billion years old.?

But that still leaves the question of longevity.

Left to their own devices, the moonlets would migrate ever farther from Saturn, leaving the ring system within perhaps 100 million years or so.

Cassini has revealed that moonlets form from material that accretes at the outer edges of the rings, explains Phillip Nicholson, an astronomer at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., and a member of the team reporting the VIMS results this week in the Astrophysical Journal.

One possible solution to the conundrum would be to give the ring system more initial mass than researchers have presumed.

Modeling work by Robin Canup, a scientist at the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colo., has suggested that some 2 million to 5 million years after it formed, Saturn had ? and devoured ? several moons the size of Titan, the planet?s largest existing satellite. But these other Titan-scale moons orbited too close to the planet to survive.

As they were drawn to their doom, the tidal forces Saturn exerted on the last victim stripped a thick icy crust and mantle from the moon?s rocky core. The ice broke up to begin forming a ring, while the core continued its death spiral into the planet.

Such a ring would have hosted far more mass than today?s rings do, according to the study, published in 2010.

The ring in the modeling also mimicked observed ring behaviors: losing mass over time while forming moons at the outer edges of the ring, for instance. The moons it formed were similar in mass to the icy moons out to and including Tethys.

The hope is that a knowledge of the composition of ring material and the moonlets in Saturn?s ring system will shed light on the ring-forming process.

Cassini launched as the Cassini-Huygens mission in October 1997 and began orbiting Saturn in July 2004. The following December, the spacecraft released the European Space Agency?s Huygens probe toward a successful landing on Saturn?s moon Titan. Since then, the orbiter has been touring the planet?s moons and rings, giving researchers an unprecedented look at the Saturn system.

TMobile acknowledges layoffs at Bellevue headquarters

It's never easy to share news of job losses, but that's the state of things at T-Mobile's US headquarters in Bellevue, Wash. Today, the carrier confirmed to us that layoffs are currently underway, which comes in advance of the UnCarrier's merger with MetroPCS. While T-Mobile representatives withheld specifics, The Seattle Times reports that somewhere between 200 and 300 employees have been laid off, whose jobs range from administrative assistants to senior vice presidents. This news follows reports of job cuts earlier this month, which are said to have affected more than 100 people in the marketing department and other divisions. For its part, T-Mobile suggests the decision was made in order to better focus its resources, which seems plausible, given its scrappy new approach in the mobile industry. It's certainly a bitter pill to swallow, but you'll find the carrier's statement after the break.

McCain: Nobody will be ?totally happy? with immigration bill

Sens. John McCain and Chuck Schumer (Alex Wong/Getty Images)

After wrapping a tour of the U.S.-Mexico border Wednesday, Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain and New York Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer said the bipartisan group crafting an immigration reform bill was "very close" to finishing the legislation. A draft, he noted, should be ready to be introduced when the Senate reconvenes after Easter.

"The bottom line is, we're very close. I'd say we're 90 percent there. We have a few little problems to work on," Schumer told reporters in Arizona after a tour of the U.S. border enforcement facilities. "We're on track to meet our deadline of having a bill when we get back to Congress in April."

Schumer and McCain are part of the team of eight senators tasked with crafting an immigration bill that can pass both chambers of Congress. The group unveiled a blueprint of its plan in January. They called it a "tough but fair" approach to solving the nation's illegal immigration problem.

In a joint press conference Wednesday, Schumer and McCain reiterated that the bill would need to be "comprehensive" to survive, and would address new ways to secure the border, penalize businesses that hire illegal immigrants and provide a "path to citizenship" for illegal immigrants already in the country. On border security, Schumer said that the federal government doesn't necessarily need more boots on the ground along the border, but it will need to invest in new technology.

"We have adequate manpower but not adequate technology," Schumer said. "You can't do it with just one fence or with people lined up."

McCain emphasized that lawmakers would be required to make sacrifices to pass the bill, but that he and Schumer planned to use what they learned during their border visit to lobby their colleagues to support the plan.

"Nobody is going to be totally happy with this legislation," McCain said. "No one will be because we are having to make compromises, and that's what makes good legislation."

Copywriting And Other Writing Terms Explained - Writing Speaking ...

Copywriting:

Copywriting is the category of writing promotional web content/material. If it?s not promotional material, a simple content writer can serve the purpose very well. Tag lines, press releases, magazine ads, online ads, mails, brochures and flyers are included in this category. It may be intended to advertise and increase the sales of a certain product. Its sole purpose is to market and advertise a person, product or any idea. Keywords are of great importance in copywriting. It also includes the commercials for TV and radio. In the end it can be said that copywriting is a process of creating a copy that entice its readers to take a certain action i.e. buying of a certain product thus increasing the sales.

E-Books:

E-Books refer to digital books. Books in formats like PDF and Doc are available on internet from where they can be downloaded and read on screen. E-book can be about anything like history, philosophy, cooking manuals, fiction etc. Often you are assigned a book; let?s say Harry Potter whose e-book is not present on web. You are asked to write it manually in the instructed format or you are sometimes asked to write an e-book on a certain topic. In the latter case, you have to make a good use of keywords in the book, its title and in the name of individual chapters. The tone that you should use depends wholly on the category in which the topic falls. If it?s a book on gardening, you can use conversational and flexible tone but if you?re going to write a book on philosophy, a formal tone is what you should adopt.

Blogs:

Blog is a very popular term that you would often come across while using internet. You can think of them as websites on a specific subject e.g. Soccer or it can be a personal blog. Most of the times, you are the publisher of your own blog. Blogs can turn into a lucrative business if you?re getting a good traffic. Blog posts are short often 300-500 words. Keyword placement can help your blog in reaching a good ranking among other websites.

Creative Writing:

Creative writing is the opposite of what we call as non-creative writing. In creative writing you?re asked for your view points. It is often termed as inspired writing. All the novels, short stories, poetry etc. are a good example of creative writing.

Press Releases:

Press releases basically fall under the category of copywriting. These are promotional writings with an aim to encourage an action in its readers. A well written press release will help you in getting more customers. A pattern is to be followed while writing press releases. They are to inform your readers about the new upcoming product/services or your new offers on current products/services. Never make the mistake of talking about future in press release. This makes your text imaginary when you use words like ?expected? and ?hopefully?. A link to the website must be added in the press release. Your tone should be formal and complicated charts or statistics should be avoided.

Editing and Proofreading:

Editing and proofreading are not some types of writings but are services provided by experienced editors and proofreaders. The main purpose of hiring these services is to make sure that no grammar, punctuation or any other mistake is left in your writing. However, these two terms are entirely different. An editor works closely with the writer to make his writing up to the mark by pointing out any mistake in the content. He will tell the author where to leave out a certain paragraph or to make certain points more clear. He actually helps you in improving your text. On the other hand, proofreader is only concerned with grammatical mistakes and errors. He will correct your punctuation mistakes.

Children?s Writing:

Children?s writing is creative writing for children aged 2-13. Depending upon your target audience, the writing is kept simple and easy to understand. These are imaginative writings. The heroes and main characters you use in your story are themselves children. This is to keep children glued to the story until they have read it all.

Who really shot Osama bin Laden?

Despite renewed controversy over who actually killed Osama bin Laden, the one member of SEAL Team Six who could settle the whole thing -- and the man who may have actually pulled the trigger that fateful night -- may never speak out, according to new reports and a former member of the elite unit.

"You're never going to hear from him," the ex-SEAL Team Six member told ABC News. "I've spoken to him. He's just the type that doesn't care about it... [He] doesn't think he did anything special. He simply pulled the trigger when he was supposed to. That's why he'll never go public."

The al Qaeda leader was killed almost two years ago, but questions over who exactly took him down reignited this week after a pair of reports -- first out of the special operations website SOFREP.com and then from CNN national security analyst Peter Bergen -- cited anonymous SEAL Team Six members who claimed that the account of "the Shooter" featured in a recent Esquire magazine article was, to quote SOFREP's source, "complete bulls**t."

Both CNN's and SOFREP's reports cite a single anonymous SEAL Team Six member each, and both point out apparent inconsistencies in the Esquire account.

In the Esquire article, an ex-SEAL, who the magazine only calls "the Shooter," claims he and another SEAL, the "point man," were alone on the stairs heading up to the third floor of bin Laden's compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. Before they reached the third floor, the point man saw a man poke his head out of the bedroom doorway on the third floor so the point man unleashed a few shots in his direction. The shots missed, however, and when the pair reached the third floor, the point man peeled off to tackle two women who were in the hallway -- a move meant to protect his teammates from possible suicide bombs. The Shooter, then, was the first to enter the bedroom where he came face-to-face with bin Laden, standing just inches away, and was the one who shot him three times in the head before he could get to a nearby AK-47.

READ: Bin Laden Shooter Reportedly Speaks: 'That's Him, Boom, Done'

That account is markedly different from the first SEAL account of the raid, as written by the pseudonymous Mark Owen in the book "No Easy Day," which came out last fall.

In Owen's account, Owen, the point man and a third SEAL -- since identified as Esquire's "the Shooter" -- all went up to the third floor together after the point man's shots from the stairway. But when they entered bin Laden's room together, they found the al Qaeda leader already down and bleeding from the head. The point man's earlier shots had apparently connected.

The two women were inside the bedroom when the point man, having deemed the downed bin Laden was not a threat, tackled them into the corner. Owen and the Shooter then fired a few more bullets into bin Laden's dying body. Only later did the SEALs realize who they had killed, Owen said.

READ: Former SEAL on Why We Shot Bin Laden on Sight

Clouding the events further is another account written by "Black Hawk Down" author Mark Bowden called "The Finish" based on interviews with higher-level military officials up the chain of command all the way to President Obama. In that account, three SEALs ascended the steps together but bin Laden was alive and standing in the bedroom when the point man entered. The point man tackled the two women in the room and the second SEAL through the door, who Bowden did not identify, was the one that shot bin Laden first in the chest and then in the head.

Bowden's book, which was still in press when "No Easy Day" hit bookshelves, later carried an insert deferring to Owen's version of events.

Esquire Author: Claims 'Extraordinarily Speculative'

The unidentified SEALs who spoke recently to CNN and SOFREP said certain parts of Esquire's Shooter account don't add up, such as the idea the Shooter knew bin Laden was a threat because he had a weapon nearby. They said that none of the SEALs knew that an AK-47 was nearby until minutes after bin Laden was killed when they found it during a search of the compound. It was stashed above the bedroom doorway, where the Shooter would not have seen it as he entered, they said.

In addition, the Shooter's detractors claimed the men on the mission had been told to try not shoot bin Laden in the head for identification purposes, meaning the Shooter either ignored that directive when he was just feet from his target, or, in their opinion, it was more likely the point man's shots were the ones that killed bin Laden well before the SEALs knew who it was they had hit.

Phil Bronstein, the executive chairman of the Center for Investigative Reporting and author of the Esquire article, told ABC News Wednesday he "absolutely" stands by his original story and said arguments like those made by the other SEALs are "extraordinarily speculative... about what they would've done, what they shouldn't have done."

Bronstein also referred ABC News to Wednesday's statement from Esquire's Editor in Chief, David Granger, which defended the Esquire story, saying that facts of the original article had been vetted by SEAL Team Six members.

"Multiple members of SEAL Team Six confirmed the Shooter was one of those two [first on the top floor] and reported to us that it was known within the unit that the Shooter had fired the fatal shots," Granger wrote. "Other individuals briefed on the mission confirmed this to us."

A spokesperson for the U.S. Special Operations Command, which oversees the Joint Special Operations Command that launched the raid, told ABC News the command wouldn't be the one to settle the controversy anytime soon. He declined to comment on operations and said the official version of events probably wouldn't be declassified for more than two decades.

That leaves the point man, the only SEAL in the room when bin Laden breathed his last who hasn't spoken publicly, to throw his hat in the ring. And according to the CNN and SOFREP reports and the ex-SEAL with whom ABC News spoke, he's not the type to trade the special warfare shadows for the media spotlight. Not "in a million years," the CNN report said.

One thing every account does agree on is that the point man was one of the heroes of that night for risking his life to tackle the two women closest to bin Laden.

"If either woman had on a suicide vest, he probably saved our lives, but it would've cost him his," Owen wrote in "No Easy Day." "It was a selfless decision made in a split second."

"He thought he was going to absorb the blast of suicide vests; he was going to kill himself so I could get the shot. It was the most heroic thing I've ever seen," the Shooter said in Esquire.

Customer Complains About Lululemon Sheer Pants - Business Insider

A disgruntled customer says that Lululemon employees made her bend over to prove her pants were see-through.?

The yoga retailer announced it was recalling 17 percent of its pants last week because many were too sheer.?

The Consumerist first reported about the woman's complaint, made on the Lululemon Facebook page.?

"I went into my local store to return my Astro pants and Invert crops, both purchased this month. I was asked to BEND OVER in order to determine sheerness. The sales associate then perused my butt in the dim lighting of the change room and deemed them ?not sheer?. I felt degraded that this is how the recall is being handled. I called the GEC to confirm this is their protocol, and they verified that yes, the ?educators? will verify sheerness by asking the customer to bend over.

Please explain as to how this is gratifying customer service? If I think my black Luon pants are sheer and there is a mass recall happening, am I not entitled to go in without having to BEND OVER and obtain a refund?"

But Lululemon's Facebook administrator quickly worked to address the woman's complaint, offering to contact her local store.

?

The company also posted this on Facebook:?

"?We don?t need to see our guests in the garments to deem them sheer. We want our guests to be comfortable in their products and will make it right for them if they feel their black bottoms are sheer."?

Carolyn?Beauchesne, author of?the blog Lululemon Addict,?also reported about women who said they had to bend over in stores to prove sheerness.?

"Lululemon has been pretty?tone-deaf in handling quality issues before?but this really takes the cake," Beauchesne wrote.?

Beauchesne also suggested a solution for the controversy.?

"Publishing a list of items that have been recalled would help clear up a lot of confusion," she wrote. "No list has been released?as of yet."

NASA turns up the heat on construction of the Space Launch System

Mar. 27, 2013 ? Welding engineers at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., have had an extremely busy winter assembling adapters that will connect the Orion spacecraft to a Delta IV rocket for the initial test flight of Orion in 2014. The adapter later will attach Orion to NASA's Space Launch System (SLS), a new heavy-lift rocket managed and in development at the Marshall Center that will enable missions farther into space than ever before. The 2014 Orion Exploration Flight Test-1 (EFT-1) will provide engineers with important data about the adapter's performance before it is flown on SLS beginning in 2017.

In a high bay of Marshall's Building 4755, expert welders using state-of-the-art friction stir welding machines worked on two separate adapters. For each adapter, a vertical welding machine stitched panels together to form a conical cylinder, then a circumferential welding machine attached a thicker, structural support ring at the top and the bottom.

"While the adapters are identical and are considered flight articles, only one will actually be used for EFT-1," said Brent Gaddes, Spacecraft & Payload Integration Subsystem manager. "The other will undergo strenuous structural testing to ensure quality, while its twin will make the trip to NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida for integration into the rest of the test vehicle for launch."

United Launch Alliance (ULA), which makes the Delta IV rocket in nearby Decatur, Ala., will deliver a full-size section of the rocket later this spring for engineers to test the fit of the adapter.

"You really don't have the tools and the resources in one place anywhere else in the world," said Justin Littell, a mechanical engineer with the welding group at the Marshall Center. "The work that we do here is exciting and I get to work with a great team. It's amazing."

Running a Small Business or Freelancing isnt an easy task.

Looking on your calendars, reminders and task lists, you have a long list of activities to be done. To accomplish those work plans, various tools, applications and other approaches are made available for us to use like ?Get Things Done? or Skylight, but still we fail to get things done within the target time frame. Why is that?

I am going to give you some genuine reasons why you are not achieving your goals. However ? a word of caution at this point ? many business owners and freelancers find these make for uncomfortable reading and possibly may find themselves feeling just a little ?hot-under-the-collar?.

Why aren?t you getting things done?

Apparently, we were not able to get things done in a better and faster way because instead of looking into the core of the problem, we build?defences?to justify our errors. We tend to make excuses that would save us from the blame.

Here are some of the reasons why we do not accomplish what we set out to achieve:

  • No assigned workspace. Most freelancers consider their own workspace a must-have. It can be messy and time-consuming to be constantly moving work to one place and then to another resulting in frustration.? This is more evident when hot desking and remote working is in play for the employed. This also has an effect of forming a routine. Human beings are habitual creatures. If you have established good work habits, they will serve you well. Having no work routine can slow you down. Face each day as if you are ?going out to the office? even if in reality, you are only going into the spare room.
  • Lack of focus. Do you suffer from a lack of focus ? if you find yourself flitting around from one task to the next without achieving anything you may indeed be lacking in focus. Develop a good, sound work-plan then follow it.?? At times interruptions are no good ? if they are caused by demanding clients, learn to say ?no? once in a while. Taking time to rediscover your rhythm and therefore productivity is difficult. I find that social media can be a real de-focusing tool. It is possible to lose your entire day on Facebook, Twitter or Google+. Thanks to social media, we have more opportunities to be social and distracted than ever before. If you are guilty of this, perhaps it is a good idea to invest in some blocking software.
  • Lack of the right equipment. Perhaps you are missing a crucial software or hardware tool that you need. Tools that can drastically improve workflows include Google Apps, Google Docs and?of course?Skylight.
  • No clear Project scope. Do you really know what your client wants you to achieve for them? A surprising number of freelancers do not have a clear scope for their project needs. Solution is to simply ask!
  • Illness. If you have been neglecting your health to get those extra hours, fatigue might be in play here. Nobody does their best work when they are sick. If you do not feel well, focus on your health issues so that you can get your work done. Take time to get well ? then forge ahead again. Tiredness. Burning the candle at both ends can seem a great way to find more time in your day; however, sleep deprivation actually slows you down and can even make you ill.
  • You just do not like what you are doing. Disliked tasks can become elephants in the room and although they may not be difficult, take on lives on their own in the fevered imagination of freelancers. Tackle things immediately when they come in ? it is guaranteed they will not become any easier and will not mature well like a good wine.
  • Overbooked and overwhelmed. It is not a good idea to take on more work than you can realistically handle ? learn to say no occasionally when you realize that your workload is becoming stressful.
  • Unhealthy attitude. Do you find yourself angry with your clients or your situation? A bad attitude can affect the way you do your work even at sub-conscious level effects with your client dealings. As your business grows so does your network, past clients or colleagues asking for ?just a little favor? ? turn what, on the surface look like minor tasks into major headaches with little or no reward. Again, learning to say ?no? is not easy but sometimes essential for your own well-being.
  • Depression and stress. Do you struggle to motivate yourself every single day? Do you find more and more reasons to simply stay in bed? Do you lack enthusiasm for tasks you used to love? If this has been going on for some time, depression may be the culprit. You may need to seek some professional help. Stress can turn a pleasant day into a nightmare. It stops you thinking logically and panic can set in. It can even, left to its own devices, lead down the road to depression. Take time out sometimes ? even a half hour walk in the fresh air may do the trick.
  • Your own boss. Some freelancers and entrepreneurs find that not being accountable to anyone but themselves is a real struggle. As a freelancer, you are primarily responsible to yourself for getting your work done ? be a firm employer.
  • No Milestones and goals. Without goals, you may not get anywhere ? goal-setting is an excellent way to improve yourself and your freelancing business. You can use Skylight?s Project Milestones and tasks to break larger goals in to tangible chunks.
  • You are just not taking on the right work. It is one of the reasons we choose to work as we do; freedom to select the work we do. However, we can be guilty of choosing projects not best suited to our skills ? be careful when selecting projects.? If you are as precious about the quality of project delivered as I am than taking on the right project can make that much difference in getting it done right.
  • Lack of passion and drive. We are creative and so to obtain the most productivity, creativity has a large part to play in our work. Like a lover, business owners and freelancers needs passion to keep the fire and flare alive. Losing passion can cause a dip in productivity when a project becomes simply a chore instead of a love.
  • Procrastination. It should come as no surprise that putting things off can keep you from being productive.
  • Multi-tasking. We are constantly bombarded with cliche?s like multi-tasking. As freelancers and business owners, we can become stuck in the mind-set that multi-tasking is a good thing. Research however has shown that far from being good, multi-tasking can actually harm productivity.? Focus on what needs to be done and when and stick to your plans.
  • Not asking for help. DIY ? freelancers are martyrs to it. ?Do-it-yourselves? seems to become a mantra and instead of seeking help when required, we actively avoid it. Sometimes however, climbing down from our self-imposed pedestal and asking for the occasional helping-hand is the best and quickest way to get things done and again, can reduce unnecessary stress and worry.
  • Effective Time management. A common problem faced by many business owners. There is always more to do than there is time in a working day. Split your work down in to manageable chunks. If you are behind than reflect this on your schedule.? There are many time management options available in Skylight. Prioritize your tasks so that you tackle the most important ones first and do not be tempted to back-track. Full-time business?management? and part-time freelancing can be difficult if you do not set aside scheduled time for work. The idea behind highlighting all the various aspects that I think might hinder your progress is to reduce time spent on each individual task and in essence reduce the time you spend on each project!

For the last point, you would ask why? Well, the reasoning is that the more tasks you complete means the more projects will be done, and the faster you can close the project, the more revenue you?ll generate. Hence, we can easily say that closing more jobs or projects effectively and easily is what is going to bring in more cash.

Yes, I know it is difficult especially if you have type A personality who thrives more on perfection in every project, this is only possible when you spend more time on the project, however, time is money.

As a freelancer or a business owners, your monthly income is reliant on how many projects you can successfully close. Essentially this means, more time for yourself or your family and friends; even so, you have more time to learn new skills or improve the old ones.

For business owners?it?s about having time to market and network, and also spending leisure time with friends and family

Over all if you think I have missed something please, feel free to leave a comment.

Florida Police Called To Home To Deal With Suicidal Man And Shoot Him To Death After He Brandishes?Scissors

250px-FL_-_St._Petersburg_Police220px-Skalm_2The family and neighbors of Arthur Dixon, 43, has raised questions over his death after two St. Petersburg police officers shot him to death after he brandished scissors in a confrontation. Police were called to the home to deal with Dixon who was threatening suicide and had doused himself with gasoline. Firefighters refused to enter the home and family and friends were cleaning up the gasoline and talking to Dixon when police arrived and ordered them to leave. An hour later, Dixon was dead.

Dixon?s mother called police to report her son as suicidal. He had suffered a head injury in a prior accident. The fire fighters were told that he had doused himself with gasoline but refused to enter the home due to a dog in the yard. A neighbor Ray Wuest, went inside and talked to Dixon and took away a cigarette that he was smoking around the gasoline. He went outside to ask the firefighters for material to mop up the gasoline. The firefighters continued to refuse to enter the home and he went back in to clean it up and talk to Dixon. Police then arrived and ordered him out.

After police took over, Dixon became irate and ran from the house with a pair of scissors. Two officers said that he raised the scissors and refused to drop them. They then repeatedly shot him in the chest.

St. Petersburg police spokesman Mike Puetz insisted ?scissors are a deadly weapon. They can cause great harm.? It is not clear however why a taser or pepper spray were not better alternatives. The fact is that the shooting is likely to be found to be justifiable in light of the weapon. Yet, family and neighbors have insisted that they could have talked Dixon down and that the police escalated the situation after their arrival.

Asia stocks rise after strong US jobs report

(AP) ? A strong U.S. jobs report helped propel Asian stock markets higher on Monday.

The U.S. government reported that the unemployment rate fell to 7.7 percent from 7.9 percent in January and that employers added far more jobs in February than expected, despite higher taxes and cuts in government spending.

The good news overshadowed a credit downgrade slapped on Italy by Fitch Ratings Agency on Friday, which said the country's inconclusive election that left no party in clear control of the government harmed the chances of Italy moving ahead with economic reforms.

"Sentiment was boosted by the better-than-expected US jobs report on Friday, but downgrade of Italy by Fitch over the weekend has casted some doubts ahead," analysts at Credit Agricole CIB in Hong Kong said in an email commentary.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index marched higher as the yen slid against the dollar. The Nikkei rose 0.9 percent to 12,389.06. Hong Kong's Hang Seng advanced 0.6 percent to 23,235.52 and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 added 0.4 percent to 5,141.70.

On Friday, both the Dow Jones industrial average and the Standard & Poor's 500 index rose for a sixth straight day on the heels of the positive jobs report. The Dow gained 0.5 percent to 14,397.07. The S&P 500 rose 0.5 percent to 1,551.18. The Nasdaq rose 0.4 percent to 3,244.37.

Benchmark oil for April delivery was down 23 cents to $91.72 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 39 cents to finish at $91.95 per barrel on the Nymex on Friday.

In currencies, the euro rose to $1.2995 from $1.2981 late Friday in New York. The dollar rose to 96.17 yen from 95.70 yen.

What you 'like' on Facebook can be revealing

(AP Photo/Paul Sakuma, File)

LONDON (AP) ? Clicking those friendly blue "like" buttons strewn across the Web may be doing more than marking you as a fan of Coca-Cola or Lady Gaga.

It could out you as gay.

It might reveal how you vote.

It might even suggest that you're an unmarried introvert with a high IQ and a weakness for nicotine.

That's the conclusion of a study published Monday in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Researchers reported analyzing the likes of more than 58,000 American Facebook users to make guesses about their personalities and behavior, and even whether they drank, smoked, or did drugs.

Cambridge University researcher David Stillwell, one of the study's authors, said the results may come as a surprise.

"Your likes may be saying more about you than you realize," he said.

Facebook launched its like button in 2009, and the small thumbs-up symbol has since become ubiquitous on the social network and common across the rest of the Web as well. Facebook said last year that roughly 2.7 billion new likes pour out onto the Internet every day ? endorsing everything from pop stars to soda pop. That means an ever-expanding pool of data available to marketers, managers, and just about anyone else interested in users' inner lives, especially those who aren't careful about their privacy settings.

Stillwell and his colleagues scooped up a bucketful of that data in the way that many advertisers do ? through apps. Millions of Facebook users have surveyed their own personal traits using applications including a program called myPersonality. Stillwell, as owner of the app, has received revenue from it, but declined to say how much.

The study zeroed in on the 58,466 U.S. test takers who had also volunteered access to their likes.

When researchers crunched the "like" data and compared their results to answers given in the personality test, patterns emerged in nearly every direction.

The study found that Facebook likes were linked to sexual orientation, gender, age, ethnicity, IQ, religion, politics and cigarette, drug, or alcohol use. The likes also mapped to relationship status, number of Facebook friends, as well as half a dozen different personality traits.

Some likes were more revealing than others. Researchers could guess whether users identified themselves as black or white 95 percent of the time. That success rate dropped to a still impressive 88 percent when trying to guess whether a male user was homosexual, and to 85 percent when telling Democrats from Republicans. Identifying drug users was far trickier ? researchers got that right only 65 percent of the time, a result scientists generally describe as poor. Predicting whether a user was respectively a child of divorce was even dicier. With a 60 percent success rate, researchers were doing just slightly better than random guesses.

The linkages ranged from the self-evident to the surreal.

Men who liked TV song-and-dance sensation "Glee" were more likely to be gay. Men who liked professional wrestling were more likely to be straight. Drinking game aficionados were generally more outgoing than, say, fans of fantasy novelist Terry Pratchett. People who preferred pop diva Jennifer Lopez usually gathered more Facebook friends than those who favored the heavy metal sound of Iron Maiden.

Among the more poignant insights was the apparent preoccupation of children of divorce with relationship issues. For example, those who expressed support for statements such as "Never Apologize For What You Feel It's Like Saying Sorry For Being Real" or "I'm The Type Of Girl Who Can Be So Hurt But Still Look At You & Smile" were slightly more likely to have seen their parents split before their 21st birthday.

Some of the patterns were difficult to understand: The link between curly fries and high IQ scores was particularly baffling.

Stillwell, designer of the myPersonality app, said revenue from it came from advertising. "I'd prefer not to say how much, but it wasn't enough to live on," he said.

Jennifer Golbeck, a University of Maryland computer scientist who wasn't involved in the study but has done similar work, endorsed its methodology, calling it smart and straightforward and describing its results as "awesome."

But she warned of what the work showed about privacy on Facebook.

"You may not want people to know your sexual orientation or may not want people to know about your drug use," she said. "Even if you think you're keeping your information private, we can learn a lot about you."

Facebook said the study fell in line with years of research and was not particularly surprising.

"The prediction of personal attributes based on publicly accessible information, such as ZIP codes, choice of profession, or even preferred music, has been explored in the past," Facebook's Frederic Wolens said in a written statement.

Wolens said that Facebook users could change the privacy settings on their likes to put them beyond the reach of researchers, advertisers or nearly anyone else. But he declined to say how many users did so.

For the unknown number of users whose preferences are public, Stillwell had this advice: Look before you like.

The like button is "quite a seductive thing," he said. "It's all around the Web, it's all around Facebook. And it's so easy."

Global economy: Shafts of sunshine try to pierce thick clouds

LONDON (Reuters) - Global economic news is improving here and there, but a batch of data due this week is unlikely to shake financial markets' conviction that major central banks are not about to take away the punch bowl.

If anything, even more monetary easing could be in the pipeline.

A minority of policymakers at the Bank of England wants to expand its bond buying. The nominee to head the Bank of Japan is promising profound change to root out deflation.

Even the conservative European Central Bank (ECB) pondered a further interest rate cut last week after its staff forecast that the euro zone would not only remain in recession in 2013 for the second year in a row but would shrink by more than previously thought.

Extraordinarily loose global policy settings speak volumes about how much spare capacity there still is in the post-crisis world economy - despite Friday's surprisingly strong U.S. job figures.

"My best guess is that the output gaps are sufficiently large in all the major economies that central banks can do additional stimulus if need be," said Derry Pickford, macro analyst at investment managers Ashburton in London.

LOTS OF SLACK

U.S. retail sales are likely to have risen 0.5 percent in February, according to a Reuters poll of economists.

That's not bad on the surface, but it would be flat in real terms if forecasts of a 0.5 percent increase in consumer prices prove accurate. Both sales figures and prices are likely to have been lifted by higher gasoline prices.

Estimating output gaps is an imprecise science. But even if America's economy turns out to be closer than anticipated to reaching its inflationary speed limit, Pickford said this was a risk for 2014 and not for the second half of this year.

In a recent speech, Federal Reserve Vice-Chair Janet Yellen firmly quashed talk of an early withdrawal of stimulus.

Indeed, after the government reported that the U.S. unemployment rate fell to a four-year low of 7.7 percent in February, traders of short-term U.S. interest rate futures were still betting that the U.S. central bank was more likely to raise rates in early 2015 than in late 2014.

What's more, Wall Street economists polled by Reuters after the jobs report said they expected the Fed to keep buying bonds through the end of this year.

Bruce Kasman, an economist with JP Morgan in New York, said he doubted the unemployment rate would fall much below 7.5 percent at any stage in 2013.

Consumers would have to absorb the shock of higher payroll taxes and job cuts triggered by across-the-board federal spending cuts after politicians in Washington failed to agree a long-term budget deal.

As a result, growth in non-farm payroll jobs was likely to slip to around 150,000 from the 191,000 average of the past three months. February's figure was 236,000. In short, the economy would not be displaying the consistency the Fed wants to see before it starts to row back from its ultra-loose stance.

"The numbers in the coming months will have a little bit of a hit from the tax-increase drag, and that will slow labor markets somewhat and will keep the Fed believing that we're going to take some time before we hit that escape velocity," Kasman said on a conference call.

DOLDRUMS

Across the Atlantic, industrial production is predicted to have fallen 0.1 percent in the euro zone and risen 0.1 percent in Britain during January.

"In our view, there is little doubt that central banks retain the capacity to do more, despite the size of their balance sheets and the low level of policy rates," Jens Larsen, chief European economist at Royal Bank of Canada in London, said in a note.

That was particularly true for the ECB, which kept policy on hold last week. "It could, if push came to shove, engage in an outright purchase program of the kind in which the Bank of England has engaged," Larsen said.

He said the ECB also had some leeway to lower its main short-term interest rate - a course of action advocated on Friday by Christine Lagarde, the managing director of the International Monetary Fund.

Fundamentally, central banks would stick to accommodative policies because the world is awash in excess capacity and growth is being held back because governments and the private sector are reducing their debts, a process that Larsen said was not about to end soon.

Fraser Thompson with the McKinsey Global Institute said consumer deleveraging could last for years.

In Europe at least, he said, the solution was for governments to mount a concerted effort to remove roadblocks such as planning curbs that deter corporate capital spending.

"Private investment is likely to have to play a dominant role if we're going to have a serious economic rebound," Thompson said.

Highway patrol: 'high rate' of speed in Ohio crash

WARREN, Ohio (AP) ? Investigators were focused on speeding as a key factor in the crash of an overcrowded sport utility vehicle carrying eight teenagers, six of them killed when it crashed into a guardrail and flipped over into a swampy pond.

While citing an unspecified "high rate" of speed, investigators wouldn't speculate on whether alcohol or drugs were involved in the crash about 7 a.m. Sunday on a two-lane road snugged between guardrails just south of this industrial community in Ohio community.

"I can't believe you're gone," Mariah Bryant, 12, wrote in a message taped to a stuffed bear at the scene in memory of her half-brother, Daylan Ray, 15, who was killed.

"I love and miss you so much," said the message, which drew a steady stream of onlookers. The bear was part of a growing memorial of stuffed animals at the roadside.

The Honda Passport veered off the left side of a road and overturned about 60 miles east of Cleveland, State Highway Patrol Lt. Anne Ralston said. Investigators say it came to rest upside down in the swamp and sank with five of the victims trapped inside. A sixth, who was thrown from the SUV during the crash, was found under it when the vehicle was taken out of the water.

The two boys who survived escaped from the submerged vehicle and ran a quarter-mile to a home to call 911, the highway patrol said.

State Highway Patrol Lt. Brian Holt said at an evening news conference that speed was a factor, although investigators were still trying to determine the speed at the time of the accident.

"We will not be speculating on alcohol and-or drug usage pending toxicology reports," Holt said.

No one in the vehicle had permission to take it, but there were no theft reports, Holt said. The vehicle was licensed to a resident of Youngstown, about 20 miles away, he said.

After the news conference, the gates of an impound lot were opened to show the wreck, with windows smashed and extensive damage to the front end, hood and roof.

Ralston didn't know where the teens were headed when the crash happened and Holt said later it wasn't clear how long they had been out.

"All I know is my baby is gone," said Derrick Ray, who came to the crash site after viewing his 15-year-old son Daylan's body at the county morgue. He said he knew that his son, a talented football player who was looking forward to playing in high school, was out with friends, but didn't know their plans.

Warren Fire Department Capt. Bill Monrean said a cold water rescue team was deployed to the scene and got five teens out of the submerged vehicle.

"Being a cold water rescue situation, cold water extends life," Monrean told AP Radio. "We knew we had a chance; even being in there a while."

Two of the teens, both 15, were brought to a hospital in full cardiac arrest, St. Joseph Health Center nursing supervisor Julie Gill said, and were pronounced dead there. She said they were treated for hypothermic drowning trauma, indicating they had been submerged in cold water.

The two who survived, 18-year-old Brian Henry and 15-year-old Asher Lewis, both of Warren, were treated for bruising and other injuries and released, she said.

All those killed were ages 14 to 19, authorities said. State police identified the others as the 19-year-old driver Alexis Cayson; Andrique Bennett, 14; Brandon Murray, 17; and Kirklan Behner, Ramone White and Ray, all 15. The Highway Patrol said Cayson was the only female in the vehicle.

Rickie Bowling, 18, a friend of Behner, sobbed at the crash scene as she recalled his playfulness and reputation as a cut-up.

"He was one of a kind," she said. "Everyone knew him in the neighborhood. In school, he always made everyone laugh."

Officials opened a school where several of the victims attended to provide counseling for families Sunday night. Superintendent Michael Notar called the crowded closed-door session heartbreaking and said counselors would be available again Monday in schools.

Cheryl Moore, 54, whose nephew is a classmate of some of the victims, emerged from the counseling session and said it was helpful. "I just feel we have to come to grips with what happened today," she said.

All eight were from Warren. It's not believed that any of them were closely related, the highway patrol said.

Warren, located near the Pennsylvania state line, is a mostly blue-collar city that was hit by the decline of U.S. steel mills. It has more than 41,000 residents in the industrial Mahoning Valley region.
