LAHORE?-?Pakistan Railways closed down operations of 34 trains in last four years and leased 10157.52 acres of land. Sources in PR told that 129 trains were plying daily in the country in 2008 and the number has been reduced to 96 in 2012. 54 cargo and 78 passenger trains were operational in 2008. A total of 66 intercity passengers, six international, six shuttle and 48 passenger/cargo trains were operational in 2008. This number has been reduced to 34 passenger /cargo, 36 Intercity, eight Passengers, 10 Mixed, six International and two Shuttle trains in 2012.The sources added that 26 cases of financial and administrative mismanagement are pending since March, 2008 and no inquiries have been ordered. Pakistan Railways is generating revenue of Rs 6122.023 million from leasing out of 10157.52 acres of land. Land has been leased out on both a short and long term basis of 10 years and 99 years respectively. PR claims that the minimum reserve lease values were set keeping in view the price ascertained by Pakistan Banking Association and assessment of the concerned Railways Division. Authorities claim that the reserve price was based on minimum values notified by the District Revenue Authorities and the bidding process was transparent as it was held under a three member committee of Railway officers belonging to Accounts, Property & Land and Marketing departments in the presence of all interested parties.
